Milk: an essential ally for babies!

The benefit of calcium is fundamental in the development of your child. And, despite everything that has been written or said on the subject, its contribution to milk and dairy products cannot be scientifically disputed.

The ideal food for a newborn baby is its mother’s milk, which contains all the nutrients it needs. This milk changes over time and adapts to the baby’s needs. For women who are not breastfeeding or who are interrupting breastfeeding, infant formulas, specifically formulated cow’s milk, to resemble breast milk, are recommended for up to one year.

Then the “growth milk” takes over. Once the baby’s diet diversifies, dairy products and then cheeses can be included in menus. But a minimum intake of 500 ml of milk per day must be respected. After 1 year, do not exceed 800 ml of milk and other dairy products per day: consuming too much protein is undesirable.

Everything is played before… 20 years!

When born, a baby’s skeleton contains 30 grams of calcium. And at the end of growth, it contains 1 to 1.2 kg. From childhood, it is therefore essential to build optimal bone capital

because, from the age of 20, it is no longer possible to increase it. This reserve is the one that your child will have to maintain throughout his life. From the age of 6 to 9 months, you can offer your child dairy products such as yogurt (containing at least 3.25% fat), cottage cheese or grated cheese.

Intolerance or allergy?

Before one year, it is better not to give cow’s milk to a baby. It is not suitable for their nutritional needs and could cause digestive problems. As for the milk of other animals (sheep, goat, donkey, etc.), they are not suitable for feeding a baby and can even be harmful.

In some people, certain sugars or dietary fibers in food can cause digestion problems when they eat them. In the case of milk, this is intolerance to lactose, which is the sugar in milk.

As for soy, rice, or based on other plants, even if they are enriched, they cannot replace breast milk because they do not respond to the nutritional needs of infants. If your child has an allergy, do not give her only the milk prescribed by your specialist.

More seriously, allergy to milk proteins generally causes digestive disorders (pain, vomiting, colic), skin reactions (plaques red, itching, pimples). This food hypersensitivity is well-known allergists and pediatricians who know how to deal with it. She almost exclusively concerns babies and young children. It heals in 90% of cases before the age of 6. When the diagnosis is made, classic infant milk and dairy products are then excluded and replaced by a specially adapted milk of which proteins are tolerated in the large majority of cases. Doctors will plan by the results of the reintroduction tests progressive milk and dairy products, under medical supervision.

Contrary to what one might think, it is important not to give goat milk to a child allergic to milk cow. Indeed, the risk of being also allergic to goat’s milk protein is important because the proteins of both kinds of milk are very similar. As for soy, rice, or based on other plants, even if they are enriched, they cannot replace breast milk because they do not respond to the nutritional needs of infants. If your child has an allergy, do not give her only the milk prescribed by your specialist.
